hi! i found out about fodor farm too late and the plots were all “sold”. how do i sign up for next year? it is such a wonderful place and i would like to be a part of it. thank you for your advice!

How to keep the grass & weeds at bay: Add more Green ($$$).
I think the city should charge more for each plot ($15-$20). This would add more value to each plot. At the rate of $5, there’s no incentive to come back or keep up the plot. You’ll get more than $20 worth of produce to make up the cost. thoughts ?

Hmm..its a good point youre making. I think the idea of keeping the cost down was so it would be affordable for all and would attract people from South Norwalk particularly. I have a feeling whether its $5 or $20 people who arent going to do the work simply arent going to do the work. Its a shame because so many people wanted plots who werent able to get them, but hopefully after this year there will be no wasted plots. I think some people may have signed up because it seemed like a novelty and didnt realize theyd have to spend several hours a week there!

I missed out on getting a plot this year and wonder if there is any other way I could participate in activities at Fodor Farm?

Hi Melissa! I’m sorry you missed out on getting a plot. Is there a waiting list? Be sure your name is on it! Sometimes people abandon their plots and they end up getting reassigned.
There will be some activities at the farm this summer such as workshops, lectures and demonstrations. I am sure these are open to the public-as soon as some activities get organized they will be posted on the site. Check back often!
If you REALLY want to participate youre more than welcome to help me pull weeds!

Hi all,
Just a reminder…we are seeing theft of precious produce…any ideas on how we can help keep this from happening? keep an eye on your neighbors plot and keeping the gate CLOSED when you are working on your plot…a good place to start. I lost my first two precious tomatoes which I was watching and waiting to ripen…such a disappointment! Now I pick ’em before they ripen, and ripen at home…such a pity. no wonder other community gardens put locks on their facility…furry friends are one thing…two legged bandits, quite another.

Hi,
I have security experience. There is nothing worse than spending your money and time growing veggies all summer long – only to have them stolen when ripe. While I really do appreciate the steps that have been taken towards theft prevention in 2010 (signs/combo lock) I regret to say they will not be effective. People who steal at Fodor are already aware that the veggies are not free for the taking . My experience with gate locks is that a lot of people won’t lock the gate behind them, no matter how many times you remind them.
Radio Shack sells fake or “dummy” cameras for $35. They are identical to the real thing. Two fake cameras will stop the theft! No thief wants to be caught on camera. Cameras are everywhere in Norwalk…as are dummy cameras you just don’t know the real from the fake.
Let’s be proactive this year. Thanks.

NEWSLETTER update!
Hi all…we have generated the first newsletter and have them hanging up at the farm (one on each shed, inside the door, the third on the bulleting board by the canopy). I encourage everyone to take a look!
PICNIC PLANNED: Save the date for August 28 (Saturday) at 6 PM. BYOB and a dish to share…vegetables, of course! Other goodies welcome. We are hoping to have a charcoal grill, we’ll see….

Also, for those who receive “The Hour”…we hope to have some press coverage coming out, soon!
TWO HELPERS at the farm…you may have noticed Jared and Russell…two teenage boys who are under Ralph’s supervision. Friendly kids, get to know them! They are supposed to be mowing, weeding and picking out the rocks etc.

Hi Kevin,
Where is your plot? I can stop by and have a look at your furry beasts and look them up in one of my organic gardening books.
Suggest finding out what they are before trying to use any remedies
since some bugs can just be doused off with water and some will just die off in the hot dry sun.

I’ve been on a “search and destroy” mission with my fuzzy yellow pests…and the brown “lady bug” creatures as well. Squishing works well (they don’t move very quickly!) and I have salvaged my plants. I also found a horticultural OIL at home depot which I sprayed twice on undersides of squash leaves.
There are also tiny eggs (brown/black…smaller than sesame seeds) closely laid together in a patch, on the undersides of plants…squish those too! Those are squash beetle eggs.

Hmmm fuzzy yellow pests. Last summer I sprayed all my plans with a mixture of baking soda and water and that helped. Maybe someone here knows exactly what kind of pests they are and a better remedy. Are they destroying ALL of your plants?

POT LUCK PICNIC is postponed due to the RAIN forecast tomorrow.

Don’t forget….Composting Lecture this THURSDAY (November 19th) at the Main Branch of the Norwalk Public Library.
Fodor Farm is hosting a PIZZA PARTY for Fodor Farm gardeners prior to the lecture.
Hope to see you at 6-7 PM for PIZZA. The lecture, open to the public, begins at 7:00.
Pizza is served UPSTAIRS in the Children’s Library resource room.

Last year, we seriously considered quitting Fodor Farm because of theft. There is nothing more frustrating then putting all of you money, sweat and time into something…only to have it vanish right before harvest time.
In 2011 we were excited about the green house. On Wednesday April 6, 2011
I watered my miniature red rose plant in the greenhouse. Today, Saturday, just 3 days later, it has been stolen. I do not believe that one of the few gardeners that have already started in the green house stole it! Likely, it is someone else who has access. The lock has been locked every time I have gone there to water.
